From Yukon to Nova Scotia: A Week on the Mail-In Electronics Repair Bench
When a high-value device, console, or commercial circuit board fails, finding a highly specialized technician who can perform precision micro-soldering isn't always easy depending on where you live. 1. The Potted Generator Control Board (Sent from Nova Scotia)
This was a fantastic diagnostic challenge. A business in Nova Scotia shipped me a heavy-duty generator control module that was completely dead after an over-current spike. To make things harder, the entire module was "potted"—meaning the manufacturer had encased the entire circuit board in a thick, hard protective rubber shell to shield it from harsh engine vibrations and moisture.
The Surgery: Potting compound is notoriously difficult to work around. I carefully chemically softened and mechanically excavated the rubber shell under the microscope to expose the power rails without damaging the underlying substrate.
The Fix: I isolated a completely blown 100µF electrolytic filtering capacitor that had shorted out on the main voltage input rail. After cleaning the carbonized area, desoldering the dead silicon, and installing a high-temp premium replacement capacitor, the generator's logic rail stabilized perfectly. 2. Laptop Motherboard with Torn Traces (Sent from British Columbia)
A client in BC sent in a high-end laptop motherboard after an accidental drop or yank completely ripped the battery connector clean off the PCB substrate. When a surface-mount connector gets torn off violently, it rarely leaves the board cleanly—it almost always takes the delicate copper pads with it.
The Surgery: This board arrived with multiple severely torn traces and completely missing structural anchors.
The Fix: Using a 40x trinocular microscope, I micro-scraped the green solder mask to expose the healthy underlying copper layers. I then hand-wove microscopic enameled jumper wires to manually bridge the broken data lines, rebuilt the structural grounding pads, and anchored a brand-new battery socket firmly to the board using UV-curable resin. 3. PlayStation 5 HDMI Port Replacement (Sent from Yukon)
Even all the way from the Yukon Territory, a gamer trusted me to rescue their PS5 console. The HDMI port had sustained severe physical damage from a cable being yanked or tripped over, crushing the internal pins and causing a complete "no video" output fault.
The Surgery: PS5 motherboards utilize a heavy ground plane and liquid metal thermal compounds, requiring specialized thermal profiles so you don't warp the board or float adjacent components during hot-air rework.
The Fix: I safely masked off the surrounding circuitry, used a professional reflow station to cleanly pull the damaged HDMI housing, cleared the factory lead-free solder from the through-holes, and precision-soldered a brand-new, reinforced HDMI port assembly to the board.
