Lightning Surge PS5 Repair Log: Replacing Blown Power Supply & Fried HDMI Encoder IC

When severe summer storms roll through the Halton Region, power surges and atmospheric lightning discharges frequently claim high-end electronics. While surge protectors handle minor voltage spikes, a direct or near-miss lightning strike often bypasses basic surge strips entirely—entering sensitive consoles through both the AC wall outlet and the connected TV's HDMI line.

A customer recently brought a completely dead PlayStation 5 to The Solder Surgeon laboratory after a severe thunderstorm. The console showed zero LED activity, no beep response, and drew zero current from the wall.

Here is how a systematic bench diagnostic isolated a two-stage surge failure, resolving both an exploded internal power supply and a destroyed HDMI encoder integrated circuit.

The newly reflowed Panasonic HDMI encoder IC cleanly aligned on the PS5 logic board with all shorts cleared and high-speed data lines fully restored.

Stage 1: Primary Surge Isolation & Power Supply Replacement

When high-voltage transient surges hit a PS5 through the AC mains line, the internal power supply unit (PSU) acts as the first line of defense.

Upon opening the chassis and testing the power supply on the bench, primary side MOSFETs and the main input fuse were completely blown. The internal switching regulator had taken a massive overvoltage hit, preventing the standby 12V rail from initializing the main logic board.

The lightning strike entered through the AC power outlet, blowing the internal power supply components. A secondary surge path then traveled through the connected television's HDMI cable, causing overvoltage to clamp directly onto the HDMI Retimer and Encoder integrated circuit on the console's motherboard.

After swapping in a fresh, factory-spec internal power supply, the PS5 successfully initialized: the blue indicator light pulsed, transitioned to solid white, and fan power was restored. However, the repair was far from complete.

Stage 2: The Secondary Surge — The HDMI Encoder Short

Even with the console powering on, connecting the PS5 to our bench monitor resulted in a "No Signal" black screen.

This is a classic symptom of dual-path lightning damage. When a surge hits a home entertainment setup, the energy travels through the TV's circuit board, jumps through the copper ground shield of the HDMI cable, and back-feeds directly into the PS5's display output circuit.

I pulled the motherboard out for micro-soldering inspection under the microscope:

  1. Diode-Mode Line Testing: Using a digital multimeter in diode mode, I probed the ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) diode arrays and line filters behind the HDMI port. Several high-speed differential data lines showed direct 0-ohm shorts to ground.

  2. Isolating the IC: Tracing the shorted lines led directly to the Panasonic HDMI Retimer / Encoder IC. The chip had taken the brunt of the secondary surge coming through the HDMI port, locking up the internal output driver.

Much like our previous cases involving complex board-level recoveries—such as rebuilding damaged lines detailed in our PS5 HDMI port repair warning blog post or isolating power shorts featured in our robotic pool cleaner circuit board repair log—resolving a fried encoder requires precise BGA (Ball Grid Array) micro-soldering.

Stage 3: Micro-Soldering the Panasonic HDMI Encoder Chip

Replacing an integrated circuit on the dense, multi-layer PS5 motherboard demands precise thermal management to prevent board warping or CPU liquid metal leakage.

First, using a professional bottom pre-heater set to safe ramp temperature and a hot-air rework station, I brought the board to reflow temperature and safely lifted the fried Panasonic encoder IC off its micro-pads.

Second, I wicked away residual lead-free factory solder from the motherboard pads, cleaned the area with high-purity IPA, and applied fresh, high-grade tacky flux.

Third, a brand-new, original Panasonic Retimer/Encoder chip was positioned under optical alignment. Hot air was applied until surface tension pulled the BGA chip perfectly into place across all micro-balls.

The Result: Full 4K HDR Restoration

With the shorted IC replaced, diode-mode resistance checks across all HDMI data lines returned to factory specifications.

I fully reassembled the PS5, applied fresh thermal compound, and booted the system into Safe Mode. The display initialized immediately, passing full 4K resolution at 120Hz stress testing without signal dropouts, flickering, or artifacting.

By diagnosing both the primary power surge and the secondary display circuit short under the microscope, we saved the customer hundreds of dollars over replacing a surge-damaged console.
