Trace Reconstruction & Custom Anchor Reinforcement: Rescuing Torn Connectors on PS5s and Samsung Oven Boards
When a surface-mount or through-hole connector gets torn off a circuit board, it rarely comes off cleanly. In almost every case, the violent mechanical force rips the delicate copper solder pads straight off the substrate, severing the high-speed data lines, power traces, and structural ground anchors underneath.
To most repair shops, a board with completely ripped pads and severed traces is immediately classified as "unrepairable" or "beyond economical repair." At The Solder Surgeon, we treat these boards as precision reconstruction challenges.
Today on the bench, we tackled two completely different devices suffering from the exact same catastrophic failure: a Samsung range/oven control panel and a Sony PlayStation 5 motherboard. Here is a technical breakdown of how we rebuilt the missing signal paths and engineered custom mechanical anchor points so these connectors never tear off again.

Case 1: Samsung Oven Control Panel — Torn Ribbon Connector
Kitchen appliances endure constant vibration, thermal expansion, and mechanical strain. During a maintenance attempt on a Samsung oven control module, the main multi-pin interface connector was accidentally yanked, shearing all mounting pads directly off the FR4 fiberglass substrate.
The Repair Protocol:
Trace Exposure: Using a surgical micro-scalpel under 40x magnification, we gently scraped away the top layer of green solder mask to expose the tiny 0.1mm copper stubs buried further back along the circuit pathways.
Micro-Jumper Installation: We ran ultra-thin 0.02mm insulated copper jumper wire from each exposed stub directly to the corresponding pins of the replacement connector.
Dielectric Protection: Every jumper wire was sealed and insulated using UV-curing solder mask to prevent oxidation, short circuits, and ambient moisture damage from oven steam.
Case 2: PlayStation 5 Motherboard — Ripped Internal Fan Connector
The PS5 internal cooling fan connector is notorious for pulling off the motherboard during routine dust cleanings or heatsink maintenance. When this connector is ripped upward, it tears off the 12V power rail, PWM speed control line, tachometer sense line, and the heavy ground anchor pads.
Without a functioning fan connector, the PS5 will shut down within seconds to protect the main APU from thermal destruction.
The Repair Protocol:
Board Prep & Cleaning: Residual solder and torn copper fragments were cleared under the microscope using leaded flux and desoldering braid.
Signal Trace Reconstruction: We micro-soldered jumpers to restore the PWM speed control and tachometer feedback signals to the motherboard's fan controller circuit.
Diode Verification: Diode mode readings were taken across the reconstructed pins to confirm proper impedance and continuity back to the system controller.

Re-Engineering Missing Anchor Points with Copper Solder Braid
Restoring electrical continuity with tiny jumper wires is only half the battle. If a connector relies solely on 0.02mm jumper wires for physical support, the very first time a cable is plugged in, the connector will tear away and break the new joints.
Because the original factory ground anchor pads were completely ripped off both the Samsung oven board and the PS5 motherboard, there was no original copper left to solder the connector legs down to.
Custom Anchor Reinforcement Technique
Expose Ground Planes: We scraped the surrounding substrate to expose solid internal ground copper planes nearby.
Prepare Copper Braid Anchors: We cut two short, precise pieces of high-density copper desoldering braid and tinned them with leaded solder alloy.
Form & Bridge: We formed the tinned braid tightly around the structural metal casing legs of the new connectors and soldered them directly into the exposed ground planes.
Flow Alloy: Eutectic leaded alloy was reflowed across the braid, casing, and board to form a solid mechanical bond.
By utilizing copper braid as an anchor bridge, we significantly increased the surface area and shear strength of the mounting points. This custom engineering stress-relieves the delicate signal jumper wires underneath, ensuring both connectors can withstand heavy daily use and future cable cycles without coming loose.
